Welcome Fall

Summer is almost over, and we are well into planning for the new school year.

 New on the Horizon:

  •  Puppet Animation Laboratory, after a successful 3 year residency at PS 46 in the Bronx (a dual language school), is ready for replication in other K-8 schools.
  • Angelo DeCesare, our FLIP author, has developed an outstanding program suitable for SINI projects, working with ELL and students with disabilities, in addition to his regular offerings.
  • Bilingual programs this year are available for bilingual students in Spanish, Haitian Creole and Chinese.
  • Our Flip program is now enhanced by the availability of a charming Toolkit, as an optional package for classrooms hosting Flip residencies.

  • The Sunday Art Club will start a new session in October, for families wishing to register their children for puppet-making and flour-dough activities.  Watch our website for registration information.

Beyond Borders: An Exciting Collaboration

We are opening the year with a welcome to fellow puppeteer, Phil Arnold, from Ontario, Canada,  with whom we are collaborating on a joint project to focus on both performance and classroom residencies.  We anticipate exchange programs between our two programs.  The following excerpt will serve as an introduction to Phil:

"The little girl looked at the puppet booth I was wearing, made eye contact with Pablo, my gregarious parrot and asked in a most serious voice, “Is there anyone in there with you?”  Pablo of course replied, “No.”  “Well whose legs are those?” She added.  “Those are my legs,” responded the parrot.  “Oh….Nice socks, Pablo.”

Pablo is my ice-breaker when I do shows at elementary schools in my corner of Ontario, Canada, and as all puppeteers who have gone before have come to realize, there is real magic in the interaction between children and puppets.  Once that rapport is established, I have found that anything is possible.

The reason for my visit is twofold: to work with PIP, and to forge an experiential relationship with the center that I can take back to London, Ontario, Canada.  One of the projects we have planned is to develop a puppet show, create two sets of the show and while one is being performed in the U.S., the other will be presented in Canada.

It will be wonderful to work on a project that will reach children in two countries simultaneously.   There will be small differences in curriculum placement, and perhaps even in the pedagogy of the oversight administrations but what will be important is that a show, developed in New York late one summer, will reach children in NYC schools and in Tweedsmuir PS in London, Ontario.

With the success of this first project comes the opportunity for the Faculties of Education, in both Brooklyn and London, to collaborate, to share, and for each to enrich the experiences of the others teacher, students, and staff.  I can’t wait."

Business as Usual: Book PIP Now!

Naturally, all our traditional residencies and professional development workshops will continue to be available to NYC schools. Choose from:

  • Residencies
  • Festivals
  • Professional Development
  • Puppet Shows
  • Arts & Technology Programs
