Puppetry residencies include story-building and play-making with puppets. Together with PIP artists, children build puppets, create storyboards and scripts and stage classroom performances. Popular programs involve Toy Theater, styrofoam puppets, shadow puppets, mask making and puppets made from found materials. Many puppetry workshops start with a performance.

Puppet drama is an art form that is highly visual. As children expand the themes in folk literature through puppet drama, they become involved in a highly creative experience. The medium of puppetry is particularly valuable to new learners of English. Children can use English freely because of the anonymity that comes from speaking through a puppet.
