STEM Framework
What is STEM?
In recent months, there has been a growing focus on structuring the curriculum within what is being called a "STEM" framework. This is a acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Most recently, President Obama announced that future initiatives would incorporate the use of STEM.
For PIP artists, this is a welcome trend. Since we already integrate the arts with the literacy, math and social studies curricula, our venture into the world of technology back in 2006, broke ground in the building of a new framework that will also draw in science and engineering. It is entirely possible to create units that link puppetry, book arts and storytelling incorporating the various STEM disciplines. Here is an example for students in grades 3 - 5 (click image to enlarge it):
Here you can get an idea of how one particular unit can be developed that meets Learning Standards in each of the content areas.
